The origins of the Castle of Valverde are indeed very ancient, the first traces of its existence dating back as far as the 10th century when the Poliachi or Poyacum Castle was located in the center of Vico Fabriciano (the original nucleus of Borgo San Lorenzo). An opportune location for a Castle that later became a noble villa, when the desire to dominate the surroundings turned into a panoramic privilege. A plaque, in fact, indicates the moment of the last mutation, when the Venetian captain Paolo Loredan finished work in 1585 to adapt the building as his own residence. Among the captains, Paolo Loredan had the historic task of completing in 1588, with the bulwark of the Fara, the new walled enclosure of Bergamo: from the Valverde Castle he could thus follow the last operations on sight. Set amid the green undulations that frame the centuries-old Venetian Walls dating back to the 16th century and built to protect Città Alta, the building with its park is considered one of the most scenically remarkable places in the hills of Bergamo, a place from which one can enjoy a splendid view of the Old Town. Despite its imposing construction, Valverde Castle is not visible from the road, as it is shrouded and protected by dense and varied vegetation-a natural park of rare beauty.

Now the mansion is owned by the Cattaneo Carrara family. Prominent figure in the family was Lydia Gelmi Cattaneo, a multifaceted and very modern woman but, above all, the first woman from Bergamo to obtain the recognition of “Righteous Among the Nations” in 1974.

The Valverde Castle lends itself to events of various kinds and is the ideal place to spend unforgettable moments, thanks also to a vacation home that allows guests to spend an unforgettable stay between history and nature.
