San Pantaleone in Negrone: a tour to discover the church that embodies nearly eight centuries of history.
Amid the hills of Scanzorosciate, in the hamlet of Negrone, stands a church that embodies nearly eight centuries of history. The first mention of an oratory dedicated to Saint Pantaleon dates back to 1309, when the Bishop of Bergamo, Giovanni da Scanzo, referred to it in his will. Enlarged in the 15th century, visited by St. Charles Borromeo in 1575, and restored in 1926 based on a design by Luigi Angelini, it still retains its late Romanesque features and the stone portico that welcomes visitors to the churchyard.
Inside, the walls are entirely covered with frescoes by Emilio Nembrini. In the presbytery, the altarpiece of the high altar by Francesco Zucco and the splendid Annunciation by Enea Salmeggia, known as “il Talpino,” dated 1613, stand out. In the apse, remnants of the medieval frescoes from the original church survive: fragments of an older building that continues to live on within the present one.
The tour is led by cultural mediators from the Adriano Bernareggi Foundation.
