Bergamo’s stadium, also known now as the New Balance Arena, is the city’s most modern and spacious sports center, as well as a great source of pride for its residents.
It has a long and glorious life: built in the late 1920s, it has maintained its 35,000-square-meter area over the decades, gradually modernizing its architecture and its amenities, such as the covers to the stands and the two curves.
Its history began back in 1927, when it was built on the area of the former hippodrome in Borgo Santa Caterina. The playing field measured 120 by 70 meters and was surrounded by an ash athletic track, with two stands, one uncovered and one covered, and a maximum capacity of 12,000.
Over the years, the stadium has undergone several major renovations to adapt to modern needs. Significant work was carried out in 2015: the renovation of the Central grandstand, the renovation of the Creberg grandstand, the removal of barriers between the Central grandstand and the field, and the construction of a new parterre for about 400 spectators.
At the end of April 2017, the municipality of Bergamo put the entire facility up for sale by public auction, which was awarded to Stadio Atalanta S.r.l., marking a new chapter in the stadium’s history. Subsequently, in 2019, work began on the complete renovation of the Curva Nord Pisani.
Compared to the original structure, coverage was added to the Tribuna Rinascimento and the two curves.
In June 2020, the second phase of work began, concluded with the redevelopment of the Tribune with access on Viale Giulio Cesare (Tribuna Rinascimento), while in June 2023 the construction of the Curva Sud Morosini began, completed for the start of the 2024/25 sports season.
Today the Arena can seat up to 21,300 spectators and is a symbol of both football passion andarchitectural innovation in the city of Bergamo.
The partnership with Gewiss (2019) was succeeded in 2025 by the partnership between Atalanta and New Balance, under which the stadium was named the New Balance Arena.
