The monumental “Translation of the Holy House,” signed and dated 1622, is one of the clearest testimonies of Enea Salmeggia’s full expressive maturity. The scene teems with characters and is developed on two registers: at the top the movement of angels supporting the holy house, suspended between heaven and earth; at the bottom numerous saints gathered in devout attitudes.
The layout is spectacular but rigorous, built to guide the eye into the mystery and at the same time to make the miracle visible. Already praised by ancient sources for its compositional invention, the work still retains the dazzling power of an otherworldly vision.
A balance between narrative, devotion, and image construction.
