Following the Peace of Lodi in 1454 between the Duchy of Milan and the Venetian Republic, Francesco Sforza commissioned his natural son Tristano to build a watchtower on the border that followed, as the treaty stipulated, the course of the Oglio River between Soncino and Calcio. The tower, called Tristan’s, was thus erected on the lands of Calciana, as opposed to Roccafranca, located on the Veneto side of the river. Tristano had only one daughter, Elisabetta, who married Marquis Galeazzo Pallavicino to whom she brought the fief as a dowry. In the first half of the 16th century, Adalberto Marchese Pallavicino, Galeazzo’s legitimized son, decided to build a sumptuous mansion “…so that he would no longer follow ungrateful princes…” and as a “…seat of idleness and peace for himself and his friends (SIBI ET AMICIS),” a purpose that can be read carved in a frieze, on the stone that runs above the porticoes of the facade. In the 19th century the last Marquis Pallavicino, having no sons, bequeathed his property to his grandchildren, the sons of his daughter and Count Barbò, and the palace has since then been named after this noble family. Currently the property is owned by the descendants in the female line of the Barbò family. Internally, the building is decorated with fine wall paintings executed in the 16th century by the Campi brothers, while the Tristano tower, although having undergone alterations, retains its original appearance as a fortified building.
