Accademia Carrara, is an important city museum that stands out in the Italian art scene for the identity and quality of its heritage.
Guardian of the great names in art history included between the 15th and 19th centuries, Pisanello, Foppa, Bellini, Mantegna, Crivelli, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Fra Galgario, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Hayez, Pellizza da Volpedo, Accademia Carrara boasts among the world’s most important corpus of works by Lorenzo Lotto and Giovan Battista Moroni, as well as a portion of the Visconti Sforza deck of tarot cards.
Major exhibitions, study projects , and ongoing research demonstrate vibrancy and dynamism, confirmed by the many updating activities, conservation campaigns , and restoration work that the Museum conducts.
Carrara also engages diverse audiences through special projects developed by the Educational Services, committed to making the Museum a space of inclusion, which focuses on the themes ofchildhood, families, and schools, as well as fragility and welfare or art as care and well-being .
Since 2024, The PwC Gardens, a green sharing space of more than 3,000 square meters, has been inaugurated, complementing the Museum’s offerings by bringing art, culture, leisure and food into dialogue with the offerings of Bù Bistrot in Carrara.
The Carrara holds 1,587 paintings, 132 sculptures, a significant collection of drawings, prints and precious nuclei of decorative arts, from fans to porcelain, from bronzes to medals. A varied and surprising itinerary, punctuated by authentic masterpieces of Italian art.
Masterpieces not to be missed
The elegant profile of Leonello d’Este painted by Pisanello and Botticelli‘s Portrait of Giuliano de’ Medici. Andrea Mantegna ‘s moving Madonna and Giovanni Bellini‘s richly human Madonna. Raphael‘s unforgettable St. Sebastian, with his dreamy gaze, and the real faces of the characters portrayed by Giovan Battista Moroni or Piccio.
The silence of Baschenis‘s still lifes, Fra Galgario‘s pigments and lacquers. And again Lorenzo Lotto, Titian, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi. The great Italian tradition of painting continuing into the 19th century: from Hayez to Previati to the poignant face of Santina Negri, painted by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, which closes the visit to the picture gallery.
