On Colle della Forcella, at 630 meters above sea level, stands the shrine that Pradalunga built to fulfill a vow. Guided tour of the place of worship.
On Colle della Forcella, 630 meters above sea level, stands the sanctuary that Pradalunga built to honor a vow. It was 1630, the year of the plague described by Manzoni: the villagers, who worked in the coti stone quarries, turned to Our Lady of the Snows, whom they venerated on the hill, and promised to build her a church if the plague were to stop. Their prayer was answered, and the church was consecrated on August 5, 1640. Since then, the sanctuary has been a pilgrimage destination and the guardian of a community’s collective memory.
Expanded in the early 20th century based on a design by Elia Fornoni, the interior features decorations by Giacomo Nembrini, frescoes by Giovanni Cavalleri depicting female figures from the Old Testament, and about fifty ex-votos—some of remarkable quality, including one created in 1935 by Emilio Nembrini. The 17th-century painting of Our Lady of Sorrows by an unknown artist, the church’s earliest devotional piece, is also on display.
The tour is led by cultural mediators from the Adriano Bernareggi Foundation.
