A unique garden where you can discover nature and special views, alone or in company
The “Lorenzo Rota” Botanical Garden is located in Città Alta, 5 minutes from Colle Aperto and 15 minutes from Piazza Vecchia.
It rests on the green Baluardo di Castagneta, once a defensive outpost reinforcing the most vulnerable area of the Venetian Walls, the northwestern one.
The Garden can only be reached via the Open Hill Steps. Along its path, which climbs up the hill among houses and gardens, tactile panels suitable for the blind and visually impaired guide the way to the heart of the Garden, telling of the transformations of plant life on earth from the Big Bang to modernity.
At the top, paths wind through groves and flower beds, flanking a lily pond and magnificent views toward the foothills of the Bergamo Alps. Described by Gardenia magazine as a “jewel” set in the ring of the Venetian Walls, the Garden is home to more than 1,000 species on an area of just 3,000m2, so much less than a soccer field.
A veritable monument to the Kingdom of Plants, this open-air museum reveals the different faces of plant species month after month. From the explosion of petals in spring, when tulips and irises bloom, to the warmer colors of summer, to the romantic shedding of autumn – every season offers wonders.
Guided tours, exhibitions, workshops, lectures and other educational activities are also held periodically at the Garden.
